YUNUS'S DEBTSLAVES
Beneath the veil of the Grameen Bank
-
-
Despite winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for its progressive microfinance programmes for the poor, the employees of Bangladesh's Village Bank are notoriously hostile to investigative reporters - and only allow interviews to be conducted with their "clients" in very contrived and controlled (you could even say scripted) situations.
Norwegian journalist Teresa Grotan and I spent a few weeks poking our noses beneath this secretive veil - and met several of the landless women who are the bank's main customers, as well as various academics, reporters and former employees who know the intricacies of this bizarre and sometimes vengeful organisation. -

The article Teresa wrote appeared in the weekend section of Dagbladet – and was shortlisted as one of the "Best Articles on Foreign Affairs in Norway" that year.

In case you can't read Norwegian, my own summary of the story goes like this :
(i) The Village Bank is a pillage bank
(ii) The Messiah is a liar and should retire -
